What is an allonge?

An allonge is a separate sheet of paper that is attached or affixed to an existing legal document, typically a promissory note or a bill of exchange. The purpose of an allonge is to add additional terms or endorse the original agreement. For example, if a promissory note needed to be amended with an additional payment schedule, an allonge can be attached to the original note to add this information. Allonges are commonly used in the banking and finance industries and are legally binding documents. However, in some jurisdictions, the use of allonges is restricted as they can be seen as a means of avoiding the need to execute a new or updated document.
